Canadian Council of Chief Judges

The CCCJ comprises all Provincial and Territorial Chief Judges and Associate Chief Judges and an Executive Director. The CCCJ meets regularly during the year.

The CCCJ is dedicated to the promotion of public confidence in the justice system and to ensuring the effective administration of Provincial and Territorial Courts in Canada by providing accessible, timely, independent and impartial justice for all.

Provincial and Territorial Courts of Canada are responsible for at least 95% of all criminal cases heard and are therefore well placed to provide valuable input on the criminal justice system and potential legislative amendments.

Purposes and objectives

Among its purposes and objectives, the CCCJ is committed to:

  • promoting public confidence in the justice system and public education about the justice system
  • developing, building and maintaining on-going and collaborative relationships with many groups and organizations including:
    • The Federal Department of Justice
    • Provincial and Territorial Departments of Justice
    • The Canadian Judicial Council (CJC)
    • The National Judicial Institute (NJI)
    • The Canadian Bar Association (CBA)
    • The Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges (CAPCJ)
    • The Uniform Law Conference (ULC)
    • The Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS)
  • promoting judicial independence
  • promoting the administrative independence of the courts in Canada
  • supporting and promoting the fulsome education of judges on substantive law and social context issues
  • striving for uniformity, effectiveness and efficiency in the operation of Provincial and Territorial Courts in Canada
  • ensuring that citizens have access to justice through a just and understandable system of justice
